On 10 June 2026, stakeholders gathered in Tangier, Morocco, for a workshop marking an important milestone in the preparation of the Schéma Régional du Littoral (SRL – Regional Coastal Plan) for the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Region. During the meeting, the final version of the draft SRL was presented and discussed, with working groups providing final inputs before completion of the process.
Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Region is characterised by a highly diverse and dynamic coastline. At the same time, it faces increasing pressures associated with rapid urbanisation, port development, tourism, pollution and climate change. The SRL responds to these challenges through an integrated source-to-sea approach, connecting coastal planning with biodiversity protection, climate resilience and sustainable development.
A key feature of the process has been its strong participatory dimension. Institutions, experts and local stakeholders have been closely involved in shaping a shared vision for the future of the region’s coastline and identifying priorities and measures for its sustainable management. The June workshop provided an opportunity to present the results of this collaborative process and discuss the final adjustments to the Plan.
PAP/RAC has supported the development of the SRL within the framework of the GEF MedProgramme, contributing its expertise in integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) and coastal planning. The process demonstrates how integrated planning can bring together environmental, social and development considerations and translate ICZM principles into a strategic framework tailored to the specific needs of a coastal region.
The finalisation of the SRL represents an important step towards strengthening integrated coastal management in northern Morocco and provides valuable experience that can be shared across the Mediterranean within the framework of UNEP/MAP and the Barcelona Convention.
